Transformation in the Pump Industry

ColdMetalFusion (CMF) is changing the way pump components are designed and manufactured. By combining precision, efficiency and flexibility, CMF offers the pump industry an excellent opportunity to evolve and respond to the growing economical and ecological demands of the market.

Let's make your production future-ready!

Advantages at a glance

  • Precision and complexity: CMF allows the production of parts with complex geometries that are difficult to produce using conventional methods. Even parts with internal structures can be realised.
  • Production efficiency: Various factors come together here. The lower temperatures, reduced material consumption and scrap rate as well as the elimination of expensive tools enable companies to significantly increase their production efficiency.
  • Energy and cost savings: The optimizations of performance parts which are made possible with CMF can achieve significant energy and cost savings while simultaneously increasing the efficiency of the components. The reduction in the carbon footprint is another positive aspect.
  • Shorter development cycles: The production and development of molds is completely eliminated. This resonates in a significant time saving in the development time.
  • Processing of performance metals: Materials like Inconel or Titanium which are difficult to mill or to cast can be easily processed.
  • Proven systems: The process leverages proven technologies and systems from established industry partners, ensuring reliability and efficiency.

"Compared to conventional manufacturing methods, pumps can often be designed much more efficient at the same manufacturing cost using CMF,” says Christian Fischer, Co-Founder and CEO of Headmade Materials.

How the ColdMetalFusion technology works

The basic CMF process chain consists of SLS 3D printing, debinding and sintering. In the SLS 3D printing process, a so-called green part is produced. The high-strength green part in particular offers a decisive advantage, as it can be reworked and thus enables a significant increase in efficiency and cost savings compared to machining in the final metal part.

At the end of the process you get a dense and fully-fledged metal component. Like any metal component, this can be post-processed in various ways.

Applications in the Pump Industry

  • Impellers: CMF can be used to produce impellers with optimized flow characteristics, which increases the efficiency and performance of the pumps.
  • Housings: Complex pump housings can be produced cost-effectively and quickly, making design innovations easier to implement.
  • Valves: Valves often have complex internal structures and require precise control of flow rates. CMF enables the production of components with high-precision and complex geometries. The flow resistance can be minimized through design optimization.
  • Spare parts and small batches: The flexibility of CMF allows the production of spare parts and small batches without the need for expensive tools. The need to keep large stocks of spare parts is also eliminated.
